Rubio Monocoat: A beautiful European hardened oil finish
Rubio Monocoat is a hardwood flooring finishing system we have been using on some of our projects lately, with excellent results. This product has many outstanding qualities. First, it is VOC free, which means that it contains no Volatile Organic Compounds. It’s components are completely plant based. And Rubio Monocoat comes in more than 40 colors, including a natural color, “Pure”.
Rubio Monocoat penetrates the cell structure of the wood. It is used with a hardener and buffed into the floor. The result is a low sheen floor that appears very natural. It protects and colors your wood in a single layer. There is no finish to scratch, and it can easily be restored or repaired in the future without the need for complete re-sanding.
Once the first coat is bonded, the finish will not allow another coat, it won’t be absorbed. This product can be applied completely in one day, and is ready to use the following day.
The coverage of this finish is excellent, so even though Rubio Monocoat is more expensive, the overall cost is about equal to those finishes that require multiple coatings. This product is definitely worth considering for those customers who appreciate natural wood, and don’t want the sheen or buildup of finish above the wood.
We have had great results using Rubio Monocoat on American Walnut and Tropical Hardwood Floors. Both of these are dark woods. Walnut is a softer wood and hard finishes really show scratches. Tropical hardwoods are hard, and scratches detract from the appearance. The Rubio product does not prevent scratches – the scratches are in the wood itself – but they will not show as much. Also, if necessary, an area can be spot-sanded and re-coated seamlessly. This is due to the low sheen and the ability to reintroduce color into the wood with the finish.
Maintenance and cleaning for this finish is the same as for any other finish system.
